1942 Memorabilia

Winter of 1942
Fred Dudding, manager of the Safeway Grocery Store in Flagstaff, Arizona shovels sidewalk before store opens.  Fred, who turned 34 on November 30, 1942, is now one of two men working for Safeway in Flagstaff, and it will stay that way until Japan surrenders in 1945.  Notice the Ford Model T in the background.  No new cars were manufactured until 1946.  Our family was one of the lucky ones who bought a brand new four door 1940 Chevrolet.
Food rationing began in less than five months after war was declared.
The very first War Ration Book issued to Lloyd Ivan Dudding at age 4 on May 5, 1942.
